The 3rd Street Project

Project Summary

The Clients

Marti and Norm Deets met in college and raised their family in Milledgeville, the town where Norm grew up. Now they enjoy their winters in Florida, which introduced them to a lighter, breezier aesthetic that inspired (but never dictated) the direction of their Illinois renovation. The couple wanted to honor their home’s country roots while updating the materials, flow, and functionality for their next chapter as empty nesters. The result is a space that feels lighter, brighter, and more personal. Through architect Skip McCloud, they partnered with Sterling Woodworks to update the kitchen, entry, bath, and laundry.

The Challenge

The main level felt dark, dated, and visually heavy. A brown stone backsplash, deep wood tones, and a multi-level island limited counter space and made the rooms feel smaller. Marti and Norm wanted a brighter, more functional home without altering the existing floor plan or replacing their appliances.

The Solution

Sterling Woodworks reimagined the kitchen with a fresh, neutral palette, a spacious bar-height island, and custom cabinetry designed for both beauty and everyday ease. Light MSI flooring, a soft tile backsplash, and Cambria Brittanicca Warm countertops brightened the entire space. Shoji White walls and an Extra White ceiling created an airy backdrop for the Hale Navy upper cabinets and island. The base cabinets and pantry were crafted in an Old Manor stain with a matching hood for a warm, grounded contrast.

Thoughtful storage solutions—such as a pull-out spice rack, Lazy Susan, Tupperware organizer, utensil pull-out, built-in microwave cabinet, appliance garage, and pantry roll-outs—reshaped the way the kitchen functions. The main level now feels open, bright, and perfectly suited to the Deets’ daily routine.

Additional Challenges

  1. Challenge: The home felt dark and heavy.
  2. Challenge: Storage was inefficient and cluttered easily.
  3. Challenge: The bathroom and laundry lacked style and organization.

SWW Solutions

  1. Solution: Light countertops, flooring, backsplash, and neutral walls allowed natural light to move through the space, lifting the entire main level.
  2. Solution: Custom cabinetry and organizational accessories created a tidy, user-friendly kitchen and pantry with purpose for every item.
  3. Solution: The oversized jet tub was removed to make room for a more open layout. A new window brought in natural light and ventilation, and updated tile and flooring added texture and interest. Custom cabinetry in both the bathroom and laundry provided practical storage for linens, cleaning supplies, and everyday personal items.

Thoughtful Design and Beautiful Craftsmanship

“I know what I like and just as importantly, what I don’t. Sterling Woodworks took that and turned it into a clear, cohesive vision. They elevated every room with thoughtful design and beautiful craftsmanship. It finally feels like our home has caught up with our personal style.“
